EDGES & OVERLAPS
What lies at the edges of the universe and beyond?
Visual Communication
This project spanned over the start of my Foundation Year. I was tasked with coming up with a concept that could be used across multiple different subjects. My first subject was Visual communication, and I had to create a Zine based on my chosen topic. I started brainstorming the concept of Edges and Overlaps, and how I interpreted them. I would begin with mind-maps and discussing ideas and jotting down research on context.
Once the ideas started flowing, I knew I wanted to take my project in a metaphysical direction, playing with the idea of existence and non-existence. I began to do some idea generation and thumbnail sketches. These would dictate the direction the project went in and the art-style.
To break up my research ad idea generation, I began to do some investigation into the letterform I could use in my project.
Using stencils and paint, the letter form was looking interesting, reminiscent of military typefaces. It also reminded me of the Alien films, which was relevant to my project as a the film is set in space.
I was then inspired by the concept of black holes distorting and warping reality. I wanted to try stretching my font on the photocopier, by dragging it during the scan.
Back to idea generation, where I started to develop some of my earlier concepts and expand on them.
With my ideas coming to a good point, I began to do some artist research to see how they could influence my artwork. I looked into artists who create artwork based on my concept.
The works of these artist would influence how I developed each page. I would take inspiration from Leo Raudy and use an airbrush to create a speckled effect to create a dusty/starry sky look.
The end result of my zine was an intentionally very confusing mess. The pages would bleed into each other and would even be dragged out of the zine entirely, being sucked into a black hole.I had a range of mixed media pieces in a small 6 page zine. I would take this level of ambition into my next subject.
Surface & Form
My next project was under a new class, surface and form. We could make basically anything we wanted, as long as we explored all options. A lot of the immediate inspiration came from other students works. I was going to create a 3D sculpture.
This time, since I was dead-set on creating a 3D installation, I jumped straight into artist research. From my last project, I knew I wanted to incorporate the Möbius strip into my project. I primarily looked into artists with an interest in 3D sculptures and mathematical shapes
During Surface and Form, I had a chance to experiment with textiles and screen printing in some workshops.
At some point during the project, I started questioning if I wanted to change themes to a horror based on. After a bit of debate and peer reviews, I decided to stick with my original metaphysics topic.
I did some research into the context of my topic.
I started to develop my idea of a 3D sculpture using Möbius strips. I wanted to create something on a large scale but needed to keep it realistic as I had very limited time for this project.
The idea generation included thumbnails and physically making an abundance of strips at varying sizes.
The end of the project had me in the screen-printing room. I was printing a starscape onto each strip and then interlocking them.
The final result was a large, hanging installation that represented how multiverses are intertwined and how the universe never ends it just repeats its cycle.
